Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1962, I would estimate that my
parents moved 7 times in my first 12 years. No, my father
wasn’t in the Armed Services, he just liked to move. The
first time we lived in Texas, my brother Bernie was born
in 1967. The second time we lived in Texas my brother
Stephen was born, in 1972. In between it was back to
Cincinnati, then once to Florida when my parents tried
to reconcile. They finally divorced in 1974.
As my grandfather tells the story, one morning there was
a knock on his front door. There stood my mother, 3 kids
in tow. She wanted to come “home”. As Gramps puts it,
what was he supposed to say? From my viewpoint, it was
the best thing that could have happened to us. We lived
in a wonderful house in an upscale neighborhood.
After High School I went to Ohio State School of Cosmetology.
I had several jobs in salons for a few years, but decided
it wasn’t really for me. I sort of “fell into” waiting tables and
ended up making more money than some of my friends
who had college educations. So I became what they call a
“Career Waitress” for 30 years.
In 1985 I met and married Ric Remers. 3 years later we had
our first and only child Michaelanne. About the same time
my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and underwent
a “radical modified mastectomy” followed by chemotherapy
and radiation.
In 1989 as many couples do, Ric and I had problems which led
Mikie and I to pack up and move to Ft. Myers, FL for a
reconciliation. The next 2 years are what I refer to as the
happiest of my life. Then I got a call one day from Mom. They
thought her cancer was back, this time on her brain. Mikie and
I packed up and flew “home”, with Ric following shortly behind
in a Ryder truck. As it turned out Mom’s cancer wasn’t back
YET. It reared its ugly head again soon after, in her remaining
breast. Another mastectomy, radiation, and chemo.
I pretty much spent the next five years being a soccer mom
(sans the mini van), working part-time, and hanging out with
my mom a lot. Life was pretty darn good. Then it hit again.
The cancer had metastasized to Mom’s lungs. She spent the
better part of 1995 in and out of the hospital until January of
1996 when cancer won. I literally thought I too was going to
die. My mother’s death was the most pain I have ever felt.
Of course I didn’t die. Although the pain of losing a parent
never goes away, one does learn to live with it, as I have.
In January of 1997, we packed up and moved to Florida again.
We bought a single wide on 1 1/2 acres with the intention of
building on the land. We never did, instead over the next ten
years we built on three rooms including an office for my home
business. Even though we started with a trailer, we made it
our home, and we loved it there.
It was also during that time, in 1998, that I discovered the
Internet! I soon found out that the world of Home Based
Businesses was also online. I had already dabbled in MLM
(A.L. Williams, phone cards, jewelry parties) offline, and
knew I had a passion for it. I joined a downline club, where
I met Deb Lane, my best friend and business partner. We formed our legal business, Marketer’s Edge, in 2005.
In 1996 my grandmother passed away. I flew “home” to
Cincinnati and stayed with my grandfather for six weeks.
During that time we decided maybe it was time to move
back “home”. We had offered Gramps to come to Florida
to live with us. He did consider it, but ultimately decided
against it. This is the man who took me in and housed me
for almost twenty years. I owe him my life and then some.
We put our place on the market and had a fantastic offer
which fell through. It’s still for sale.
We’ve been here with Gramps, “home” since April 2007. On
November 21, 2007 Mikie presented me with my first
grandchild, Josephine Leigh (my mom’s nickname was “JO”).
I absolutely love being a grandma!
In January 2009 I was diagnosed with “Undifferentiated Adenocarcinoma”. That’s doctor talk for Cancer of Unknown
Origin. I’ve been going through chemotherapy since March
2009. I have good times and bad, but mostly good. I do my
best to maintain a positive attitude, which I believe is
essential to one’s health. Of course I lost my hair for a few
months, but the biggest challenge was being thrown into early menopause! I’m still apologizing to my loved ones
That’s pretty much my life in a nutshell.
